The payments industry, in continuing efforts to maintain the integrity of sensitive cardholder data, has been exploring Tolkienization as a possible adjunct or replacement for existing encryption-based security models.
Gilbo Gabbins, a payments security expert with Shire Partners, explains, “Rather than converting cardholder data into digital tokens and storing them in cloud-based vaults, we consider it a much more secure alternative to convert credit card data into Dwarf gold and store it under the Lonely Mountain, protected by an ancient and powerful dragon.”
Like the more traditional tokenization protocol, Tolkienization also stores card data away from the merchant environment. Before leaving to take second breakfast, Gabbins added, “We also strongly considered converting data into Gondolinic runes. Cyber-thieves have a really hard time with ancient Elvish scripts.”
